As summer visitors start to descend on our shores, I am starting a weekly list of Things to Do on Cape Cod, focusing on the Mid-Cape area.   Every Friday, I will list the TOP FIVE HAPPENINGS in our general area.  This will not be an exhaustive list by any means, just the top five things I would do if I wasn’t working all the time!      Sometimes events in other Villages will be worth crossing town lines for, but NEVER will I take you over  the  Bridge!  So have fun and you might want to subscribe to our RSS feed for  weekly updates throughout the summer.

Just in time for Easter, Dennis Village has a new candy store!  Nancy’s Candy, Etc. opened on April 1 next door to the Post Office on Main St., in the former home of Leslie Curtis Antiques.  Owner Nancy Magnuson worked for many years at Kandy Korner in Hyannis and has decided to transfer her expertise to her own shop in Dennis. Lucky us!

Fans of the Dennis restaurant scene will recall that Center Stage Cafe on the grounds of the Cape Museum of Art, closed its doors nearly three years ago in a move that surprised and disappointed many a local foodie.  Good News!  A new restaurant called SUMMER STOCK  (great name – get it?  Cape Playhouse, the oldest summer stock theatre in the US?) will open its doors early this summer at the same location!  Dennis Selectman have approved the licenses for the establishment to serve lunch and dinner and also provide live music seven days  a week.  We welcome Summer Stock enthusiastically and hope it will become “the” place to go in Dennis Village.  Stay tuned for news of the opening………..

Did you know that Cape Cod has more theatres than off-Broadway at the moment? So says, Nina Schuessler, artistic director of the Harwich Junior Theater, a strong supporter of the move afoot to have the tourst industry see Cape Cod not just as a summer resort, but a cultural destination as well. The recent hiring of a new executive director for the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod is a big step in the right direction. Kevin Howard’s goal is to have the world beyond the Sagamore Bridge view the Cape as THE place to go to experience creativity in all its forms. We who live and work here are all for extending our tourist base and the season as well. Think about it – arts and culture are not dependent on sunny beach days! Promoting the arts will attract a new audience to our glorious shores and enliven the arts economy as well. We wish Kevin Howard well in his endeavor to nurture and market the Cape’s artistic communities and put Cape Cod on the cultural destination map!

This Sunday, December 12th, Dennis Village will host its annual Christmas Stroll! All day the Village is decked out for the holidays, offering all manner of treats and events. Don’t miss the Food Festivalon the Village green (near the Bandstand) for food sampling from our local restaurants, like Blue Moon and Dennis Inn. All day there will be hayrides around the Village and trolley rides as well! Music will be provided by local choral groups, including Susan Linton singing “Christmas Eve on Cape Cod” in the Village green at 1:00 p.m. And what is a Christmas Stroll without SANTA, who will be presiding over breakfast from 8-11 at Carlton Hall.

The Cape Cod Summer Baseball League is considered to be the  premier collegiate baseball league in the country. How lucky and proud is Dennis to have the Y-D Red Sox , 2010 Eastern Division champs as our home town team!

You can read all the stats and see all the photos online or in the local newspapers.   But we have a personal  story to tell. This summer we were privileged to serve as  host family to  Y-D player, RYAN GIBSON, a left-handed pitcher from Oklahoma University.  From that day in July, fresh from the College World Series,  when he barely fit through our front door, Ryan and the summer baseball experience that came with him, were beyond compare.  We’ve lived on the Cape for 13 years and had never been to a Cape League game -shame on us!  This summer we made up for it, attending 3-4 games a week. Cape League games are  family entertainment at its purest – wholesome and fun and FREE, not to mention the top class baseball talent!

Being a host family to Ryan enriched our summer beyond measure as his presence in our home was a joy and a lot of  fun from start to finish.  We put him on a plane last Saturday, back to his Oklahoma family and his Oklahoma life, hopefully never to forget his summer on Cape Cod with the Y-D Red Sox and the Lomenzo family!

Our very own Captain Frosty’s made the TOP TEN list of BEST FRIED CLAMS ON CAPE COD!  We would have to agree…which means that we have partaken of the tasty fried treats on more than one occasion!    An added bonus – every entree at Captain Frosty’s is accompanied by their signature clam fritters! 

The very casual interior  is traditional Cape Cod knotty pine – all booths.  This past winter, Frosty’s added some outdoor dining in the front of the restaurant to supplement the patio in the rear.  A great place to go for a late day soft serve ice cream as well!  (They recently added frozen yogurt to their soft serve menu). Does it sound like I know WAY too much about this place?

 Check it out, but go early as the crowds are bound to grow even larger as news of this “award” spreads!

In the heart of Dennis Village, tucked away behind Main Street,  is an absolute gem known as the CAPE COD CENTER FOR THE ARTS. This cultural hub consisting of 20 acres is home to The Cape Playhouse, The Cape Cinema and  The Cape Cod Museum of Art. How lucky are we??!

The Playhouse’ summer stock season began this week featuring TEA AT FIVE with Stephanie Zimbalist in the lead of this bioplay about Katherine Hepburn (saw it on Broadway with Kate Mulgrew – really great.)  Lots of great plays coming up, including GREY GARDENS (also saw this one on Broadway and loved it.)  The Cinema features foreign-type films (no Avatar playing here!!) and is a very special cinema-going experience with it’s extra wide seats and, of course, the fantastic Roger Kent mural on the ceiling. ( They occasionally have live shows  like this past April when they featured an indie rock group that was holed up  in Dennis to rehearse for the upcoming Coachella Music Festival in CA. )  The Museum itself is a real treasure, exhibiting the art of outstanding artists and offering art classes for children and adults throughout the year, with special programs in the summer months.  All in all, a very fine cultural center supporting the arts on Cape Cod – and we’re so fortunate to have it right here in Dennis!

This is the first in what will be a series on things we love about living in Dennis, MA!

Today’s post focuses on a little known treasure here in Dennis Village  - HARVEST GALLERY.  There appears to be  a trend in Dennis Village for galleries to have dual personalities! (See my previous post on Borsari Gallery).  Besides being a top notch gallery of contemporary art, Harvest Gallery  is also home to a fabulous wine bar.  As owner/artist Michael Pearson says of his establishment “we entertain all the senses!”  The stylish space hosts the work of 30+ artists (including Pearson himself) as well as the wine bar featuring vintages  from around the world.  A full menu of tasty seasonal food is also offered at small tables and the sit-down bar.  The best part (in my opionion!)??  Harvest Gallery offers LIVE MUSIC by local musicians on weekends!  The Harvest Gallery is a VERY COOL place – don’t miss it!
